Animal sterilisations, education, and making sure tummies are full are our favourite projects. To date, we are proud to have enabled over 2 tons of food to be donated to animal shelters and raised enough funds to have over 100 dogs
sterilised. Our main project for 2017 and 2018 is to drive an education campaign for school children.
Although we help where we can, we set out to choose a main project to focus on each year; in 2016, we produced and sold calendars, the proceeds of which was donated for animal sterilisations.
In 2017, our focus was on education because, as Nelson Mandela so succinctly put it: “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”
Our pilot project was a talk at Welgemoed Primary School, it turned out to be a smash hit!
The children were engaged and curious to learn more – and, of course, they loved meeting Rolo, editor Marise’s adopted dog from Fisantekraal Animal Welfare, and an adorable adoptable puppy from AACL Bellville.
Dr Alex Strydom, a newly-qualified vet working with Fisantekraal Animal Welfare, and animal adoptions officer Helen Sadler of AACL Bellville, were present to discuss animal care and welfare with the learners.
The school then organised a Care Week drive of their own – collecting a massive amount of pet food and other goodies which were donated to FAW and AACL.
It was wonderful to see so many children so interested in animal welfare – and we can’t wait for the next school talk.
